Eight tenths of a second: that is the amount of time that the Brebeuf girls basketball team led Chatard on Saturday, February 6th. The girls have had a rough season with only seven wins, but they turned the whole season around in less than a second in the Sectional Championship.

The girls were up against Chatard, a team that had beaten them the last eight times they had played. Down 17 in the second half, the game seemed over.

The Braves were running out of time, and with the clock dwindling, the Braves stopped, focused, and started making a lot of defensive plays. Chatard scored only four points in the final quarter. Elizabeth Saunders ‘16 and Alia Martin ‘17 led the way for the Braves. The crowd started to get loud, and Chatard started to make mistakes.

With the clock running down, Martin stole the ball and drove down to the lane and got fouled with .8 seconds left. She knocked down the first free throw and gave the Braves a 40-39 win. This is the Braves’ first sectional championship in the last five years.

Coach Matt Mayer finally got to cut down the nets, and the unbelievable comeback was complete. The girls will face Indian Creek in Regionals this Saturday and hope to keep this Cinderella story alive. If they play with the same passion they did for the last 12 minutes of Saturday, this team will be hard to beat.
