Over 1,500 people gathered in the sanctuary and overflow rooms at Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation on Monday, October 29th to honor the victims of the Pittsburgh Tree of Life shooting. Eleven candles, marked each with a Star of David, flickered in a row at the front of the sanctuary. The 5:30 Memorial Gathering featured many speakers, including religious leaders of different faiths. A Chabad Rabbi, a Methodist Pastor, and Imam from the Indianapolis Muslim Community Association were among them. Rabbi Dennis Sasso of Congregation Beth El Zedeck offered moving words to the audience, encouraging action from both politicians and community members, “this is not a time for arms” proclaimed Rabbi Sasso, “it is a time to lock arms together.” Among the attendees of the gathering were icumbent US Congressman Andre Carson and Jill Donnelly, wife of Icumbent state senator Joe Donnelly. Local politicians, including Indianapolis Mayor, Joe Hogsett and Mayor of Carmel, Jim Brainard also offered their remarks. The names of the victims were read aloud and the words of the mourner’s kaddish, a Hebrew prayer to honor the lives of the victims, was recited.
