Enola Holmes is one of the newest movies that Netflix has released. Millie Bobby Brown played Enola, in addition to helping to produce the movie. The movie couldn’t have been released at a better time. “Enola Holmes” depicts personal triumph amidst a lot of political discourse. Throughout the movie, there are mentions of politics and the whole problem that the movie is centered around has everything to do with the political movements of the time.

There are many mixed reviews about this movie. Maddy, a friend from a movie review Discord server, said that, “I think if it went into theatres it would be a flop. It seems to be for a very specific set of people and the fact that it’s on streaming services makes it so all those people have access to it. It looks like another attempt to milk the Sherlock Holmes series.” She does have a point, there have been so many Sherlock Holmes series and movies, with spin-offs that even Tom and Jerry couldn’t resist. It’s true that if the movie were only shown in theaters, it wouldn’t do as well. Mostly because the majority of people aren’t comfortable with going into theaters, but if the theaters were open there would be other movies, like “Black Widow,” that would be more in demand.

Bridget, another person on the review server, said, “I really liked how it tied in with the old stories, and it also had a similar setting. I also liked that it showed the challenges that women had to go through at the time.” A lot of people on the server have said that they have high expectations for the movie and hopefully the movies that follow. The ending of “Enola Holmes” was left open for a reason, it would be easy to add more movies to continue the series.

Personally, I really enjoyed the movie, but I can see how others wouldn’t. A lot of cliches were used and the movie was pretty predictable. There were a lot of opportunities to make the movie unique and have something unexpected happen, but the producers didn’t take them. When Enola got hurt, that could have been another obstacle that she had to overcome, just showing again how strong she was. The mother could have been used to make a side plot or something else, but I don’t think her role in Enola’s story is done yet.

The movie is based on the “Enola Holmes” book series by Nancy Springer and follows Enola Holmes as she makes her own place in a world that would reject women like her. It takes place during the 19th century at the start of the women’s suffrage movement. Despite being oppressed by society, Enola makes her own place in the world and doesn’t let anyone tell her what to do. She is strong willed, logical, and balances wisdom and innocence. Sure, her tendency to break the third wall and look directly at the camera can be a little unsettling at times, but she has the potential to become a great role model.
