Shadow and Bone is one of Netflix’s newest adaptations. It was released on April 23rd, 2021.  The tv show is a combination of two best-selling books series Shadow and Bone and Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo. The show follows Alina Starkov played by Jessie Mei Li. Alina Starkov is an orphan mapmaker fighting in the army for her kingdom Ravka. Ravka is surrounded on all sides by enemies and The Shadow Fold, an area of impenetrable darkness filled with monsters has torn their country into. Alina discovers she is a Sunsummoner. She is her kingdom’s last hope to save them from the shadow fold and their enemies. The story also follows The Crows, a band of thieves from across the water who are on a mission to track down and kidnap Alina. 

Shadow and Bone brings in new, diverse faces as the leading cast for the show; Jessie Mei Li, Archie Renaux, Amita Suman, Kit Young, and Freddy Carter. The show has reached the top of Netflix’s Most Viewed Shows in several countries. 

As a fan of the books, I found the show to be very enjoyable. There is nothing like seeing some of your favorite characters come to life on screen. I think the show did a good job of keeping the same story and characters as the books while adding new exciting details. I did feel like the show was a bit rushed in some places and I would have loved a little more time to flesh out the details in the plot. This show will keep you hooked till the very last second. While there is not a confirmed second season yet, things are looking good for us to get one.
