Chatard. Chatard. Chatard. The unanimous answer to the question: which competing school do you dislike the most? Every year a new freshman class comes into Brebeuf and becomes accustomed to the underlying hatred all Brebeuf students have for Chatard. From student sections across sports, in fall, winter, and spring, there is not one game against Chatard that fails to get student’s attention.
Madi Fritz ‘27 highlights that Chatard attracts “a lot more competition between student sections” because no matter what, every Brebeuf student has a die-hard desire to beat them. Some students admit that oftentimes “the way they [Chatard] take care of things or the way they win isn’t always right” explains Rylee Pate ‘28.
Mr. Mayer is approaching his 17th year at Brebeuf and recalls the time he was angrily shaking on the sidelines as a coach, not because he was anxious, but because he was playing Chatard and wanted to beat them so badly. He notes, “It’s always fun when you can ruin Chatards night!” And to put it simply- according to Father De Leon- “They hate us cause they ain’t us!”
The rivalry with Chatard has been one for the ages. This everlasting contention comes back to a simple competition between high schools partly because we are on a “similar level to Chatard in all sports (for the most part), so the games are really good and competitive,” according to Mr. Mayer.
Make sure that every time you hear Chatard on the announcements for an upcoming game you pay close attention. The more fans we can accumulate in support of beating Chatard, the better the odds are of beating them. Chatard brings large student sections to every game, so it is important that we start showing up in support for all of our teams.
