With the Brebeuf Boys Wrestling Season underway, the team grows excited for the new team and upcoming duels throughout the season. The Brebeuf Wrestling has high expectations for the new season with numerous new recruits that could prove vital in the team’s success.
The wrestling team found success last year with Senior Nigel Dix going deep into the playoffs for the 113 lb weight division. This year the team hopes to do the same with multiple of their players. Sophomore Jack Schwab commented that, “I think our lineup this year is great and we have a lot of new people who are willing to put in the extra mile.” Schwab’s optimism reflects the overall idea that the team could find some success in new players and hard work.
New recruits have been an important part of the wrestling program this season, as the team has gained numerous athletes that could be a deciding factor in the team’s success. One of these new recruits is Sophomore Edward Relue. Edward commented, “I am looking forward to getting into good shape during the conditioning and getting better at the sport.” The combination of cardio and strength in wrestling makes it a sport that is both challenging and makes someone a better athlete.
One notable aspect of wrestling is the grueling conditioning that takes place in order for the athletes to be ready for their faceoffs. Brebeuf wrestlers will lift two times a week and condition on top of that. Conditioning often involves constant movement and holding some form of weight until they can no longer. This conditioning to say the least is difficult and tests both the physical and mental capacity of the athletes.
Another important part of wrestling is its weight classes, which determine who each wrestler faces off against. The weight classes vary and begin at 106 lbs. Most of the time wrestlers must cut weight in order to make the weight classes for their matchup. This means that even off the mat, wrestlers must be disciplined to stay within their own weight.
As the Brebeuf wrestlers work through their season, they will have to stay conditioned, consistent, and be ready for whatever the sport throws at them. Brebeuf wishes good luck to the wrestlers and their hopes for a championship.
