On his junior album, Beauty Behind The Madness, Abel Tesfaye, the man behind the hair, complements intense, emotional lyrics with groovy beats. In the past year, Tesfaye’s popularity has increased after being featured in the Ariana Grande hit “Love Me Harder,” the Fifty Shades of Grey smash “Earned It,” and his own songs of the summer “Can’t Feel My Face” and “The Hills.”

Now that the entire BBTM album has hit the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, Billboard reports that “The Weeknd is the first non-rapper with as many as 10 Hot 100 hits in the same week since [Taylor] Swift nearly five years ago.” Tesfaye is also the “first male artist to top Hot 100, Billboard 200 & Artist 100 simultaneously” according to Billboard.

Tesfaye’s start goes all the way back to Toronto in 2011, where he self-released three mixtapes that created his first album, Trilogy. Tesfaye’s clear inspiration, vocally, is Michael Jackson, whom he is frequently compared to. While “In The Night” has an upbeat instrumental, the lyrics tell the somber story of woman who’s a victim of abuse, methodically comparative to Jackson’s “Billie Jean”.

Songs like “Acquainted,” “Shameless,” and “As You Are” take long time Weeknd fans back to Triology vibes, especially the last 2:30 minutes of the latter. The Weeknd elevates his pop star status by collaborating with expert chart-topper Ed Sheeran on “Dark Times,” and reigning alternative queen Lana Del Rey on “Prisoner.” Notorious for having good beats, Tesfaye continues the pattern by employing one of the best in the business, Kanye West, to co-produce “Tell Your Friends.” Power ballad “Angel” switches gears from The Weeknd’s typical loner, villainous jams to a song where his adoration for new girlfriend Bella Hadid are displayed.

Tesfaye continues his summer of hit singles onto a hit album, solidifying his reign as King of the Fall. “I think The Weeknd’s new album is pure musical genius. It definitely takes a different vibe than Kissland or Trilogy, but his new poppy self is truly angelic” said resident Tesfaye expert, Lauren Turner ‘17.
