Almost everyone in the school has been told to be quieter in the library at some point in their life.  Brebeuf’s new library is an amazing improvement from the old library, but according to the librarians, there seems to be a couple issues surrounding the noise levels throughout the area.

Mrs. Karcz, one of Brebeuf’s librarians, said, “Our group discussion area is a little too loud. I think students are envisioning it more like a student commons or cafeteria whereas it needs to be primary focused upon study first and talking second. ”

Last spring, Brebeuf had an accreditation evaluation, which pointed out that Brebeuf needs to “distribute quiet study versus group collaboration,” said Karcz.  This was based off of what students said they wanted in the new library.  The majority of students said that they want more study cubes.  Large numbers of students also said that they want group meeting rooms and tables for groups.

The new library, or Information Commons as it is officially called, is broken into three sections: group study, quiet study, and silent study.  This new space is not intended to be a place of merely socializing.  The library’s main focus is to provide three distinct areas of study, while staying conducive to the Brebeuf community’s study needs.

Mrs. Karcz is trying to communicate to the students that the noise level in the group study can often be too loud and can prevent students from getting work done.  To eliminate this issue, she encourages students to go to the section that coordinates with what type of studying they are trying to accomplish.
