The college football season has now kicked off with what some are calling the largest season opener of all time. The University of Texas vs Ohio state commenced at noon on Friday, August 31st. Following that, some other notable games include LSU at Clemson, Alabama at FSU, and Notre Dame at University of Miami.
For most fans, the focus of the week was on UT-Austin at Ohio State because of their respective pre-season rankings of #1 and #3 overall in the country. For both teams this was their game of the season. The two had faced off previously in the College Football Playoff semifinal where Ohio State had beat Texas 28-14.
The Buckeyes may have not had the most dominant offensive performance but with a 14-7 victory over Texas, Ohio State was able to beat the #1 ranked team in the country.
In other games, Florida State University was able to upset the #8 preseason ranked Alabama at home. Florida State beat the powerhouse in a stunning 31-17 victory. Following the win, Florida State rushed the field marking their first win against Alabama since 2007.
The upsets don’t stop at FSU and Ohio state however, with both Miami and LSU upsetting their opponents. Miami beat Notre Dame in the classic “Catholics vs Convicts” rivalry at home in a close 27-24 victory. Miami was able to pull off a last minute clutch field goal to bring them up against the Notre Dame Irish.
Notre Dame fan Sam Grant ‘27 commented, “I felt the victory was so close and the 17 point run in the fourth quarter was great. Definitely one of the best games I’ve seen in college football.”
Ultimately, the week was a chaotic and upsetting start for the season to many fanbases across college football. With the extended College football playoffs, the year is sure to be a stunner and an opportunity for many teams.
