This year, Carmel is finally hosting the annual Christkindlmarkt, after having to shut it down last year due to the global pandemic. The Christkindlmarkt is a very popular and widely adored attraction spot where locals go to celebrate the holidays.

It’s a traditional German-style market that sells a variety of items ranging from small wooden items to delicious snacks. The shops and pop-ups all surround the centerpiece, the famous Ice at Center Green rink.

The goal of the market is to bring German customs to Indiana for all to experience. Shops offer German snacks such as laugenbrezel and famous wursts, as well as handcrafted pieces of art.

Every year, the market draws over 200,000 visitors who come to enjoy the festive atmosphere. With the hot spot being closed last year, they’re expecting huge crowds this season.

In the heart of the town, you can find the market and the ice rink in an open space located by the Palladium at The Center for the Performing Arts.  It’s a popular spot for family night, hanging out with friends, or even a date.

People can make reservations to ice skate and end the evening with a warm snack or drink. The market also offers many sources of entertainment such as live music and warm fires.

I interviewed Elise Wagner 25’ who visited the Carmel Christkindlmarkt during the first weekend of December. I asked her how her experience was and she said,” Although it was crowded, I had a great time hanging out with my friends and enjoying the holiday season.”

She also said, “Ice skating is not something I get to do often, and I was really excited I had the opportunity to do so! I highly recommend finding time this month to attend the market and ice skate.”

This year, you can make your visit to the Christkindlmarkt between every Wednesday to Sunday. The market will be in action  from November 20th to December 24th, so make sure to plan your visit!
